The firm was originally founded by two brothers, Buck and Kevin Ryan. Kevin had spent a large portion of his career wrestling with large financial models and eventually getting into more technical areas of data analysis (like scripting with SQL, Python, R, etc.). He was constantly thinking of ways to bring more advanced features to an Excel-like working environment. Buck is a math and programming whiz and was right out of college. He thought he'd give a startup a shot and learn a few things about financial modeling in doing so.
